Many former Knights have
extended their playing careers after leaving UCF. Some Knights
have played professionally in the United States, while others
have headed overseas to represent UCF all over the world.
In 2005, former UCF star Mark Jones made his National Basketball
Association debut with the Orlando Magic. Jones has also played
for Colorado in the NBA D-League. The D-League offers players to
develop their talent in a highly competitive atmosphere under
the NBA’s umbrella.
Dexter Lyons, a star of the Knights’ 2004 NCAA
Tournament squad, spent the summers of 2004 and 2005 playing
with NBA teams. He participated in the Pepsi Pro Summer League
with the Boston Celtics in 2004. The following year, Lyons
played with Orlando in the Reebok Vegas Summer League. Lyons was
picked by Idaho in the third round of the 2006 D-League Draft.
During the 2007-08 season, eight former Knights played
professionally overseas: Marcus Avant (England), Ed Dotson
(Portugal), Gary Johnson (Germany), Dexter Lyons (Spain),
Roberto Morentin (Spain), Lavell Payne (Bulgaria), Josh Peppers
(Japan) and Anthony Williams (Norway).
